For terms beginning on or after August 15, 2019, if you are required to particiate in classroom training, as well as online training, you will be paid a housing allowance in the same manner as if you were doing all classroom training.
Example 1: A 3-credit undergraduate course requires students to physically attend class in a classroom once a week for 1 hour. The remainder of the training is conducted online. This class is paid the same as any course which only has classroom training.
Example 2: A 3-credit undergraduate course requires students to meet in class for the 1st day of term and attend all mid-terms and finals in person. The remainder of the training is conducted online. This class is paid the same as any course which only has classroom training.
Example 3: A 3-credit graduate course meets once at the beginning of the term. The remainder of the training is conducted online. This class is paid the same as any course which only has classroom training.
Example 4: A 3-credit undergraduate course allows students to voluntarily attend a classroom course 1-hour a week, though the student has the option to take that hour online. If you choose to attend the classroom training, this class is paid the same as any course which only has classroom training.
If you choose not to participate in the classroom training (as a result, all of your training is online), this class will not be paid the same as if it were classroom training; rather you will receive the online training rate (half the national average).
Example 5: A 3-credit graduate course has a classroom meet-up before the term begins. During the actual term all training is conducted online. This class is NOT classroom training since there is no required classroom training during the term. It is solely through distance learning and therefore only qualifies for half the national average.
Distance Learning consists of training which uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor, synchronously or asynchronously.
For the purpose of distance learning, technologies include:
- Web-based training
- One-way and two-way transmissions through open broadcast, closed circuit, cable, microwave, broadband lines, fiber optics, satellite, or wireless communications devices;
- Audio conferencing
NOTE: If a course only utilizes training through the technologies outlined above, a student taking the course is only authorized a housing allowance of half the national average.
